Police: Powder in an envelope to Habeck, probably grinding sand

When white powder shows up in the mail to a prominent politician, extreme caution is advised. In Flensburg, such an incident leads to the evacuation of a police station.

An envelope with a white powder addressed to Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) led to the evacuation of a police station in Flensburg. The envelope was handed in at the police station on Wednesday afternoon by employees of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen district office. Officials called the fire department because of the suspicious content. Firefighters secured the envelope in a special container and took it out of the building in the late afternoon.

After an initial investigation, dangerous chemical or radioactive substances were ruled out, a police spokeswoman said on Thursday night. However, it was initially not yet clear whether the powder contained biological substances. According to a first interim result, it is grinding sand, the police said on Thursday. The city’s health department took over the further processing. The background to the incident was initially unknown.
