Recep Tayyip Erdogan remains President in Turkey – and can rely on his voters in Germany. The fact that Erdogan enjoys broad support in Germany also has to do with the origin of many German-Turks.
“Yes, look at us – do we look as if we should be ashamed of our country?” asks a man at Hamburg’s Dammtor station on the evening of the runoff election. He wears the red Turkey flag around his shoulders like a superhero’s demeanor. When the votes were counted in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was already unassailable at this point. Dozens of cars speed triumphantly through the large intersection next door, honking their horns. “Erdogan won’t let us down,” shouts the man with the flag now through the noise, “the president stands by us and we by him. The Germans don’t care about us!”
