“We want to show solidarity, but we are reaching the limits of what is possible,” says the Prime Minister of Saxony – and, if in doubt, calls for a change in the law.
Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer believes that an annual upper limit for the influx of migrants is necessary. “In 2015 we reached a mutual consensus on the following […] that the limit is somewhere around 200,000 people who we can easily integrate here,” said the CDU politician on Friday on ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin”.
According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, around 244,000 applications for asylum were made in Germany last year. This year, by April alone, there were more than 110,000 applications. “We want to show solidarity, but we are reaching the limits of what is possible,” said Kretschmer. One is on the way to 400,000 to 500,000 applications. Germany must act. “And if this requires a change in the law, you have to do that too.”
In recent interviews, Kretschmer spoke out in favor of cutting social benefits for asylum seekers. At the same time, he proposed a commission to deal with all questions relating to asylum.
