It’s about Franco-German relations, European issues and a catch-up date for an unusual state visit – Frank-Walter Steinmeier has arrived in Paris.
Almost two months after the cancellation of his state visit to Germany, French President Emmanuel Macron received Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Paris. Steinmeier arrived for a dinner at the Élysée Palace on Thursday.
According to the Office of the Federal President, Steinmeier had been invited by Macron to speak about Franco-German relations, European issues and a catch-up date for the state visit.
Macron’s visit should have taken place at the beginning of July with the stations in Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg, Berlin and Dresden. However, the French President canceled it at short notice because of riots in France after the death of a young person during a police check. It would have been the first state visit by a French president to Germany in 23 years. Both sides assured at the time that the visit should be made up for as soon as possible. In addition, Franco-German government consultations are due to take place in Hamburg in the autumn.
The Federal President was accompanied to Paris by his wife Elke Büdenbender. His wife Brigitte also took part in the conversation with Macron in the evening. She would have come to Germany with us at the beginning of July.
