Arms deliveries: Reports: Kim Jong Un wants to visit Putin

Because Moscow needs weapons and ammunition for the war of aggression against Ukraine, North Korea could become an important partner. According to reports, Kim Jong Un will travel to Russia for this.

According to a report by the New York Times, North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un wants to travel to Russia to negotiate arms deliveries with President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow is concerned with securing supplies of arms and ammunition for the war of aggression against Ukraine, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed US and allied government officials. The visit should therefore take place on the sidelines of an economic forum in Vladivostok, which is scheduled for September 10-13. The Washington Post also reported on the planned meeting.

Kim rarely leaves his isolated country, but officials said he could travel to Vladivostok on Russia’s Pacific coast in an armored train for the meeting, the New York Times wrote. But it is also possible that Kim will travel to Moscow.

The newspaper also reported that Putin was hoping for North Korean artillery shells and anti-tank weapons. Kim is said to be hoping for advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines. Kim is also seeking food aid for his impoverished country, officials said.

US: North Korea and Russia negotiate

US National Security Council communications director John Kirby said on Wednesday that US intelligence agencies had information about arms sales negotiations between the two countries. Accordingly, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently traveled to North Korea to convince Pyongyang to sell artillery ammunition to Russia.

Since that visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged letters pledging to expand their bilateral cooperation, Kirby said.

With the envisaged arms deals, Russia would receive from North Korea “significant quantities and several types of ammunition” “that the Russian military intends to use in Ukraine,” Kirby said at the time. The US government is asking North Korea to end negotiations with Russia.
