AfD: Concentration camp memorials refuse to take part in memorial events

The AfD does not have sufficient distance from positions that contradict concentration camp memorials. That’s what foundations from Dachau or Bergen-Belsen say. That’s why the party is partially denied access.

Several concentration camp memorials in Germany distance themselves sharply from the AfD and refuse to allow the far-right party to take part in official commemorative events. This is shown by a survey published on Thursday by “Welt” at the Dachau, Mittelbau-Dora, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen and Neuengamme memorials.

No AfD registrations are being accepted, Stephanie Billib from the Bergen-Belsen Memorial told the newspaper. The AfD has never sufficiently distanced itself from revisionist and anti-democratic positions. For relatives of Nazi victims and survivors, it is “unimaginable to stand together with AfD representatives in the cemetery where the concentration camp victims are buried.”

AfD politician Björn Höcke has already been excluded from concentration camp memorials

The spokeswoman for the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, Verena Bierl, explained that they reserve the right to make use of their house rules “and persons, parties or organizations that have made anti-democratic, racist, anti-Semitic or other statements that contradict the foundation’s purpose or to deny access to the memorial or to exclude them from taking part in an event.

AfD representatives are also not able to take part in events at the Buchenwald Memorial, their spokesman Rikola-Gunnar Lüttgenau told “Welt”. Thuringia’s AfD state leader Björn Höcke had already been denied access to an event on Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2017.
