Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has once again warned of the danger of war in Europe. The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine presents the country with a new reality from which it has been weaning itself for 30 years, said the SPD politician on Deutschlandfunk.
“Namely that there is a threat of war in Europe from an aggressor. We are not mentally prepared for that,” he said.
Germany must prepare for such a danger in order to be ready to defend itself. “We have to be able to wage war, a defensive war, a defensive war, so that in the end we don’t have to,” Pistorius said.
Pistorius is asking for time
You can’t prepare for a danger that you don’t perceive and don’t accept. The next few years will be about using the special funds and restructuring the structures of the Bundeswehr. But it takes time to reverse 30 years of failures.
Pistorius had already commented on this on ZDF on Sunday. “We have to get used to the idea again that there could be a threat of war in Europe. And that means: We have to become fit for war.
