Donald Trump criticizes strict abortion ban in Arizona

In Arizona, a 160-year-old law banning abortion, which Republicans campaigned for, is to be implemented. The law is too extreme even for Donald Trump. Abortion is becoming an increasingly sensitive issue for the presidential candidate.

Former US President Donald Trump has criticized the decision of the highest court in the state of Arizona, according to which an 1864 law with an almost complete ban on abortion can be enforced. When asked by a reporter on Wednesday whether he thought this had gone “too far,” Trump agreed. “Yes, they are, and it will be fixed,” he said.

“I’m sure the (Democratic) governor and everyone else will come back to something sensible, and I think that will be done very quickly,” Trump continued.

Arizona’s abortion law imposes penalties of up to five years for doctors

The highest court in Arizona declared a 160-year-old, almost complete ban on abortion to be enforceable on Tuesday. Citing the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned a nationwide abortion right, it said the draconian 1864 law can remain in place. This provides for a penalty of up to five years in prison for doctors who perform an abortion.

Donald Trump’s new law could cost votes

On Monday, Trump advocated leaving abortion regulations in the hands of the individual states. The ex-president has repeatedly boasted about making the 2022 Supreme Court ruling possible by nominating three conservative justices to the court during his presidency.

The issue of abortion is extremely polarizing in the USA. Abortion rights are a difficult issue for Trump because it could potentially cost him important votes from women voters. The right-wing populist enjoys strong support among conservative evangelical groups that vehemently reject abortion. President Joe Biden and his Democrats are hoping to score points with many voters in the November elections with their support for liberal abortion rights.
