The European elections are in just under two weeks. After the AfD MEPs were excluded from the right-wing ID group, Commission President von der Leyen reiterated her criticism of the party.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has once again criticized the AfD in the election campaign before the European elections. The AfD is at war with fundamental values, is spreading propaganda for Russian President Vladimir Putin and is spying for China, said von der Leyen at a CDU election campaign event in Steinhude, Lower Saxony.
The CDU politician is the top candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European elections in about two weeks.
Von der Leyen accused the AfD of having “brought Putin’s propaganda into our society”. “Then recently, a close associate of the AfD’s top candidate was handcuffed. The public prosecutor’s office is firmly convinced that the man is spying for China from the European Parliament,” she criticized. CDU Federal Chairman Friedrich Merz stressed that the nightmare of right-wing populists must be ended. The AfD is not the alternative for Germany, but moral and economic decline.
The right-wing ID group excluded all nine AfD MEPs on Thursday with immediate effect. Previously, AfD top candidate Maximilian Krah had attracted sharp criticism with comments about the Nazi organization SS. One of Krah’s employees was arrested about a month ago on suspicion of spying for China.
The European elections in Germany are on June 9th.
