Climate: Fridays for Future calls for climate strikes ahead of European elections

The European elections will take place in Germany on June 9. Before then, Fridays for Future plans to strike in more than 90 cities and draw attention to the climate crisis.

The Fridays for Future movement has called for climate strikes ahead of the European elections. Protests are to take place on May 31 in more than 90 cities in Germany and in twelve EU countries, the organization announced on Wednesday. The climate activists want to draw attention to the importance of the EU in tackling the climate crisis. In Germany, the European elections will take place on June 9.

“While flooding, water shortages and heat waves threaten hundreds of thousands in Europe, right-wing extremists are stirring up fears about climate protection and want to roll back climate laws. Instead of being intimidated by right-wing slogans, the new EU Parliament must clearly decide in favor of climate protection and democracy,” said Frieda Egeling, spokeswoman for Fridays For Future Berlin in a statement.

Fridays for Future is calling for an EU-wide phase-out of coal, oil and gas by 2035 and a doubling of investments in renewable energies and climate-neutral industries.
