During the economic crisis, a million people in Greece lost their jobs. In the port of Piraeus you meet those who have been hit hardest – they are looking for a bench to sleep on. And a bit of dignity.
By David Wünschel
The port of Piraeus is a place that most people leave quickly. But for around three dozen people it is home. They have spread out their lives between ticket counters and piers. Shopping carts full of plastic bags, suitcases full of clothes, as well as their boxes, their blankets, their sleeping bags.
Every 15 days, Vaggelis Lygnos comes by with a team of helpers. This time they are carrying blue plastic bags with wet wipes, toilet paper, toothbrushes and water bottles. Anyone who needs a bag gets one. Almost everyone needs a bag.
