Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a ceremony at Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square to officially start their meeting.
Putin thanked his host for his “ongoing” support: “We greatly appreciate your systematic and ongoing support of Russian policy, including on the Ukraine issue,” Russian news agencies quoted him as saying. Putin praised the cooperation between the two countries, “which is based on the principles of equality and mutual respect for each other’s interests.” “Russia and North Korea have been linked by strong friendship and close neighborliness for decades,” said the Russian president.
Putin then announced a new “fundamental document” that would lay the foundation for long-term relations between the two countries.
The previous evening, Kim had already greeted Putin upon his arrival at the airport and welcomed him in a carefully staged ceremony in his country, which is largely isolated from the West.
