She apparently already has the necessary votes – but Kamala Harris will have to wait until August to be officially named as the Democratic presidential candidate. But there is some pressure.
The US Democrats want to choose their presidential candidate virtually before the party convention in mid-August. The relevant committee of the Democratic Party approved the procedure for this. If only one person stands for election, electronic voting could start on August 1 at the earliest, the party announced. If there are several candidates, voting will begin a few days later.
Potential candidates would have until the end of July to submit a presidential application and demonstrate, among other things, the support of 300 delegates. So far, US Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate.
Is there no alternative to Kamala Harris?
When President Joe Biden withdrew from the election campaign, he proposed his deputy as a replacement candidate for the election in early November. According to US media estimates, Harris currently has the support of enough Democratic delegates to be nominated as her party’s candidate. This is evident from public expressions of support. No challenger within the party has yet come forward.
The Democrats had actually planned to officially choose their presidential candidate at a major nominating convention in Chicago from August 19 to 22. With Biden’s withdrawal, the cards are now being reshuffled. However, the party leadership had already made plans to bring forward the candidate selection before Biden’s withdrawal. This has to do with the deadlines in the states by which the parties must have confirmed their candidates in order to be on the ballot.
Democrats do not want to wait for party convention
The party is particularly concerned about the state of Ohio. There, the deadline would have expired before the start of the party convention in Chicago. However, Ohio eventually passed a law that extends the deadline until after the party convention. The Democrats argue, however, that leading Republicans in Ohio could challenge this and that the Democratic candidate must therefore be nominated before the party convention.

The Democratic Party also announced that once a presidential candidate has been chosen, he or she can name a vice presidential candidate. Harris has not yet said who she would like to bring to her side. Possible candidates include governors from various states such as Josh Shapiro, Roy Cooper and Andy Beshear – or Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
