President Maduro’s clinging to power is causing anger among the people of Venezuela, who feel cheated out of change. The protests are escalating, and some see only one way out.
There are hardly any cars on the road, even the rain is dripping softly on Caracas. The street vendors have stayed at home. Only one bakery is open, but the saleswoman wants to close because she is afraid.
Anger has reigned in Venezuela since the election results were announced. On Sunday, the electoral authority CNE announced that incumbent President Nicolás Maduro had won the election with 51.2 percent, while challenger candidate Edmundo González Urrutia had received 44.2 percent of the vote.
