In 2020, Trump refused to admit defeat. US President Biden fears that this pattern could repeat itself.
US President Joe Biden is concerned about Donald Trump’s possible reaction should the Republican lose the presidential election in November. He is “not at all confident” that there will be a peaceful transfer of power in this case, he said in an interview with US broadcaster CBS News in response to a question on this matter.
Biden was referring to Trump’s “bloodbath” quote from March. At that time, the former president had said at a campaign event: “If I’m not elected, there will be a bloodbath.” In the interview, the US president said of Trump’s comments: “He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it.”
You can’t just love your country when you win, added Biden, who himself has dropped out of the presidential race. CBS News published excerpts from the interview on Wednesday (local time). It will be broadcast in full on Sunday.
In the 2020 election, Trump did not accept his defeat. When Congress met in January 2021 to formally confirm Biden’s victory, Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol in Washington. The Republican had previously incited his supporters in a speech with unsubstantiated claims that the election victory had been stolen from him through massive fraud.
Almost four weeks ago, Trump was the target of an attack. A 20-year-old opened fire at a campaign event in the US state of Pennsylvania and hit the 78-year-old in the ear. One spectator was killed and two others seriously injured. Security forces killed the perpetrator.
