The father of microcredit, Muhammad Yunus, is to lead a transitional government after the flight of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He is returning to his homeland from abroad to do so.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has arrived in Bangladesh to lead a transitional government following the resignation of authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Local television images showed him returning to his South Asian homeland. The 84-year-old inventor of microcredit, who was most recently in France, is to be sworn in on Thursday evening (local time), according to army chief Waker-uz-Zaman.
Before his return, Yunus called on the people of his country to remain calm. “Let us make the most of our new victory,” he said in a statement. “Our youth are ready to take this lead and create a new world.”
Former Prime Minister Hasina fled abroad in a military helicopter on Monday after weeks of mass protests and deadly clashes between demonstrators and security forces. According to local media, more than 300 people died in the protests.
