The hype surrounding the Democratic candidate is reminiscent of the hysteria surrounding the first black president. Again, it is not justified, but a little euphoria is still appropriate.
In 2008, Barack Obama was a US Senator from Illinois, he had only been in office for a few years, and had previously worked as a social worker in Chicago. Of course, he had written a successful book, graduated from Harvard Law School, and was considered a good speaker. But Obama was still a fairly inexperienced politician. A few years earlier, he had almost missed the Democratic Party Convention because his credit card was empty when he tried to rent a car.
It is important to write this soberly because Obama was no longer seen in such a differentiated way in 2008. And because mentioning something like that would have seemed almost like blasphemy to many observers at the time, including the author of these lines.
