In view of the Ukrainian offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk, Russia has ordered the evacuation of parts of the neighboring Belgorod region. “There is hostile activity on the border of the Krasnoyarushsky district,” said regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov in a video on the online service Telegram. “For the health and safety of our population,” people are being taken to “safer places.” According to official figures, around 14,000 people live in the district.
Around a dozen Ukrainian drones shot down
At the beginning of August, Ukrainian troops crossed the border into the western Russian region of Kursk and advanced several kilometers into Russian territory. According to information from Kiev, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are involved in the offensive.
According to the Defense Ministry, Russian air defense shot down eleven Ukrainian drones that were heading for targets in the Kursk region. Drones were also intercepted over the Belgorod region and two over the Voronezh region.
Ukraine retaliates in Belgorod border region
The Belgorod region, which borders Kursk, is a regular target of Ukrainian air and drone strikes in retaliation for attacks by the Russian side. Since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, evacuations have been ordered several times in this region.
