The person temporarily arrested at Berlin-Spandau station is not a wanted ex-RAF terrorist. “The checks have shown that he is not a wanted person,” a spokesman for the Verden public prosecutor’s office told the German Press Agency. The man’s release has been ordered.

Previously, a man had been provisionally arrested in connection with the search for two former RAF terrorists. According to a report by “Bild”, the informant claims to have recognized the man, who was sitting in an ICE train, as Ernst-Volker Staub. The LKA spokeswoman simply said that the arrest was in connection with the wanted Burkhard Garweg (55) and Ernst-Volker Staub (69).

The Berlin Federal Police Directorate said that a man was temporarily arrested during a personal check on Tuesday at around 9 p.m. He is in custody in Berlin, a spokeswoman said.

First RAF terrorist arrested in February

Since 2015, the Verden public prosecutor’s office has been investigating the former RAF terrorists Staub, Daniela Klette and Garweg for attempted murder and attempted and completed aggravated robbery in several cases. Klette was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the end of February. The police – led by the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office – had been looking for her for decades.

The search for Staub and Garweg is still ongoing. They belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist Red Army Faction (RAF). In 1998, the RAF, which had killed more than 30 people, declared itself disbanded.
