It would have been hard to believe a few weeks ago: The Democrats unleashed euphoria for themselves – and their leading candidate – at their party convention in Chicago. After US President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race, Kamala Harris was confirmed early in an online vote due to deadlines in the state of Ohio. Now the public ceremony at the party convention will take place.
Democrats are catching up in election polls
Around 50,000 delegates, volunteers and supporters are expected at the United Center for four days. Each day has a different theme, moderated by well-known American personalities. All of the party’s grandees are speaking or have already appeared: the Obamas, Hillary Clinton, who wanted to become the first female president of the USA in 2016 – and Biden, who has probably been preparing for months to be celebrated himself during these days. Things turned out differently.
Harris has breathed new life into her party and is doing everything right at the moment. No one knows whether this will continue until the election in November. But the Democrats are generating enthusiasm among their supporters again, collecting millions in donations and catching up in the polls – unthinkable just a month ago. Nevertheless, it remains a close race between Harris and her Republican opponent Donald Trump.
See pictures of a blue spectacle.
