Ukraine’s energy system is severely damaged. This makes everyday life for Ukrainians even more difficult. Fears of a difficult winter are growing.
After several nights of Russian air strikes on the Ukrainian energy system, the power outages in Ukraine have been significantly expanded. The state-owned utility Ukrenergo (Ukrainian Ukrenerho) listed the capital Kiev and eleven other areas in the east and center of the country in which consumers will have their power cut off for a longer period of time. These also include Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia. The previous plans for staggered shutdowns have been temporarily suspended, it said.
Diesel generators are running in Kyiv
According to reports, this means that for many parts of Kiev there is only electricity for about 12 hours a day. Often when the electricity goes out in apartments, the water also goes out. Many shops, restaurants and banks are maintaining emergency operations with diesel generators.
The Russian army caused further damage to the energy system with heavy air strikes on Monday and Tuesday. According to military sources, Ukraine was able to fend off 2 out of 3 missiles and 60 out of 74 combat drones during the night to Thursday. Russia had already severely damaged many Ukrainian power plants in the spring. This is increasing concerns in Ukraine about an extremely difficult third winter of war.
