The CDU came in second in Thuringia. Its state leader still sees the mandate to govern as his own. What he doesn’t say is also interesting.
Thuringia’s CDU leader Mario Voigt sees the forecast for the state election as an order for the Christian Democrats to form a government. “We as the CDU also see this as an opportunity for political change under the leadership of the CDU,” said the 47-year-old after the first forecast in Erfurt. The CDU came in second behind the AfD.
Voigt said he now wanted to hold talks so that there would be a “sensible government under the leadership of the CDU” in Thuringia. He announced that he wanted to approach the SPD and its top candidate Georg Maier.
He said of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW): “We will be open to discussion there too.” However, world politics are not decided in the Thuringian state parliament. It is about the Thuringian issues that are important to the people there. The BSW recently stated, among other things, that a rejection of US medium-range missiles was a prerequisite for participation in the government.
No coalition with AfD – no sentence about the Left
Voigt renewed his promise regarding the AfD: “With us there will be no coalition or cooperation with the AfD.” He did not refer to the Left in his speech. Previously, the CDU had repeatedly ruled out coalitions with the Left. Voigt had repeatedly referred to the decision-making situation of the Christian Democrats.
With regard to the current state government, Voigt said: “Red-red-green has been voted out.” It is also clear that the traffic light government in Berlin has been punished. According to initial forecasts, the FDP and the Greens will not return to the state parliament. With regard to the CDU result in Saxony, Voigt said: “The CDU is back as the strongest political force in the center.”
According to forecasts, the AfD will achieve 30.5 to 33.5 percent in Thuringia, thus winning a state election for the first time eleven years after its founding – but it is unlikely that it will provide the future prime minister. The CDU will therefore achieve 24.5 percent. The BSW will achieve 14.5 to 16.0 percent straight away.
Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow’s Left Party achieved 11.5 to 12.5 percent, the SPD 6.5 to 7.0 percent. According to forecasts, the Greens, with 4.0 percent, will not enter the state parliament in Erfurt, nor will the FDP, with 1.0 to 1.3 percent.
