With Claudia Sheinbaum, a woman is at the top in Mexico for the first time. There is a lot of work ahead of her – because the country is sinking into violence, especially against women.
Brenda Saavedra stands on a dusty hill in the border town of Nogales and looks around in all directions. To the south is León, the city she left after drug cartel men almost killed her. In the north, the USA, where she wants to find protection from male violence. Around them is the Bella Vista neighborhood, where a local gang holds power, 30 armed men, not a single woman.
The single mother has found shelter in a fenced-in and guarded women’s shelter, the “House of Grace”, run by a nun. “My only security at the moment,” she says.
