VIP tickets, clothing and glasses: The new British Prime Minister Starmer accepted expensive gifts. He was heavily criticized for this. Now he reacts.
After criticism for accepting expensive gifts, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has paid back thousands of pounds for VIP cards and designer clothes. The head of government has paid more than 6,000 pounds (7,210 euros) that have accrued since he took office at the beginning of July, Downing Street said.
There is no violation of the code for government members because Starmer declared the donations. However, he was accused of double standards. The head of the social democratic Labor Party had promised change and more integrity after the scandals of the previous conservative government.
Taylor Swift VIP tickets
The cost corresponds to four VIP tickets each for a concert by US superstar Taylor Swift in London and a well-known horse race as well as two tickets for a football game. The total also includes a rental agreement for designer clothes as well as a hair and make-up appointment for Starmer’s wife Victoria, as British media reported.
A government spokesman said the Prime Minister had commissioned new principles on accepting gifts and hospitality, which would update the ministerial code. “Prior to the publication of the new code, the Prime Minister paid for several entries in his own register.”
