The 67-year-old Shigeru Ishiba took over from Fumio Kishida just nine days ago. Now he wants to secure the voters’ mandate in new elections at the end of October.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has dissolved the Japanese House of Representatives to prepare for a new election on October 27 and secure a mandate from voters for his government. The 67-year-old only succeeded Fumio Kishida as head of government on October 1st.
The fragmented and weak opposition expressed criticism of the early election date as it did not allow enough time for debates.
Ishiba is aiming to renew his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has been rocked by corruption scandals. The political veteran was Defense Minister from 2007 to 2008 and later Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Revitalization.
