It is Volodomyr Zelenskyj’s third meeting with Olaf Scholz in five weeks: this time in Berlin and this time with the promise of military aid worth 1.4 billion euros.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj extensive additional military aid. The Western partners will deliver, among other things, air defense systems, artillery and drones worth 1.4 billion euros. The SPD politician said this at a joint meeting between the two.
Ukraine-Ramstein meeting canceled
Zelenskyj was welcomed in Berlin by Chancellor Scholz on his multi-day European tour. A meeting with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is planned later. The talks are not only about continued support for Ukraine with arms deliveries for the defense against the Russian invaders, as well as efforts to find a peace solution.
Zelenykyj has already visited Croatia, France, Great Britain and Italy on his European trip. He actually wanted to take part in a Ukraine summit with 50 allied countries on Saturday at the US air force base in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate. However, the summit was postponed after US President Joe Biden canceled the meeting due to Hurricane Milton.
Third Zelenskyj-Scholz meeting in five weeks
It is the Ukrainian president’s second visit to Germany within five weeks and the third personal conversation with Scholz during this period. At the beginning of September, Zelensky took part in a defense ministerial meeting of the allies in Ramstein and met Scholz in Frankfurt am Main. Just three weeks later, the two met again shortly before the UN General Assembly in New York for a conversation.
