Rescue or divorce? Scholz invites Lindner and Habeck to crisis meetings
Budget hole and economic strategy: The traffic light coalition could break up in the next few weeks because of these controversial issues. Now a small group is exploring whether it can still be saved.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) will meet several times before the coalition committee meeting on Wednesday evening to look for ways out of the traffic light crisis. According to information from the DPA news agency, two to three such discussions are planned from Monday.

On Wednesday – the day after the US election – the coalition committee, which also includes the party and parliamentary group leaders, will meet. It will be about the two major controversial questions in the coalition: How can the billion-dollar hole in the federal budget be plugged before the crucial adjustment meeting of the Bundestag’s budget committee on November 14th? And what strategy can be agreed upon to combat the economic crisis in Germany?
Habeck and Lindner have presented concepts for this (also read about the recent clinch in the traffic light: “18 pages of explosives – this Lindner paper is a reckoning”). Scholz is currently drafting a “pact for industry” with representatives from business and unions. Both questions are seen as possible breaking points in the coalition. The meeting of the coalition committee, which includes almost 20 representatives of the coalition parties, was scheduled many weeks ago. It is the first such meeting since the parliamentary summer break.
