Donald Trump is gradually putting together his future cabinet. The first positions have already been awarded. Now the Republican is nominating the next candidate.
The Senator from the state of Florida, Marco Rubio, will be the Secretary of State. Donald Trump nominated the 53-year-old Republican as an “advocate for our nation” and called him “a true friend to our allies” on Wednesday, confirming US media reports about the nomination from the previous day. Trump also described his future secretary of state as a “fearless warrior who will never back down from our adversaries.”
Rubio, a son of Cuban immigrants, sees China as the biggest challenge to US foreign policy, supports Taiwan and is an advocate of a tough stance towards Iran – thus sharing Trump’s hard line. Regarding the war in Ukraine, the 53-year-old has in the past advocated “pragmatism” – meaning that, like Trump, he sees no point in continuing to support Ukraine with billions of dollars.
Marco Rubio – the Latino rising star among the Republicans
Rubio was considered a rising star in the Republican Party from a young age. In 2000, at the age of 28, he moved into the Florida House of Representatives, and in 2007 he became the first chairman of Latino American descent. With the support of the ultra-conservative Tea Party movement, Rubio made it to the Senate in Washington in 2011.
