Marine Le Pen wants to become President of France in 2027 – but a court in Paris could soon thwart that. And a successor is already ready.
France’s leading right-wing populist Marine Le Pen likes to harshly criticize the domestic judiciary: the punishments are too lax, the system too lax. Now, however, she herself is threatened with a verdict, the extent of which she finds “outrageous.” The public prosecutor’s office is demanding five years in prison for her alleged embezzlement of EU funds. There is also a five-year ban from holding public office, which will also come into force if Le Pen’s defense files an appeal. The latter is particularly spicy. If the court follows this demand, the 56-year-old Madame Le Pen will no longer be able to run in any elections until the end of the decade: “Marine Présidente” after Emmanuel Macron’s departure in 2027 – her dream would then be a thing of the past.
