After more than a year of fierce fighting between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, a ceasefire is increasingly expected. Lebanon calls for quick action.
Lebanon’s acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for the immediate implementation of an expected ceasefire following Israel’s “hysterical” attacks on the Lebanese capital Beirut. The violent attacks on Beirut showed that Israel does not attach importance to any law, Mikati said, state news agency NNA reported. The international community must act quickly.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a ceasefire with the Lebanese Hezbollah militia shortly before Mikati’s statement was published. He said in a speech that he would submit a corresponding draft to his cabinet for approval.
The Israeli Air Force had previously carried out massive attacks on Beirut and the southern suburbs. Eyewitnesses reported more than 20 attacks on targets in the center of the capital. The Lebanese Health Ministry said at least 10 people were killed in the attacks in central Beirut neighborhoods.
