Why does the election take place on February 23, 2025?
After Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the end of the traffic light coalition in November 2024 and asked the question of trust in parliament on December 16, 2024, the Bundestag was dissolved by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on December 27, 2024. The election day was determined on February 23.
The Bundestag election usually takes place at the earliest 46 and at least 48 months after the ongoing election period. However, if there is an early termination of the Bundestag election period, early elections must take place within 60 days after the resolution decision.
