FIFA announces: Qatar World Cup sets TV records around the world

The World Cup in Qatar achieved very good TV ratings and sometimes even set new records – but not in Germany.

While the TV ratings for the World Cup in Germany are noticeably lower than for the previous tournament, the Qatar World Cup seems to be going down very well in many other countries. FIFA was able to present several TV records and strong ratings.

Before the start of the current World Cup, there was often talk of a boycott and disinterest in Germany. On the one hand, because organizers Qatar and FIFA have been repeatedly criticized for escapades, scandals and an all-round failure to award the tournament. On the other hand, because the tournament takes place in the middle of a winter break and there is hardly any atmosphere.

So far, this has mostly been reflected in the TV ratings in this country. Although significantly more fans watched the second German group game against Spain than the DFB team’s entry into the World Cup, the general number of viewers is noticeably lower than it was about four years ago.

However, Germany seems to be more of a phenomenon than a benchmark in this respect. FIFA was able to announce a first major assessment of the ratings. The tenor: The World Cup is very well received in many countries.

Strong ratings and TV records: The World Cup is usually very well received

Of the table football has presented many an example from the report of the world association. In Japan, for example, a whopping 36 million people watched the game against Costa Rica. Against Germany there were still 26 million spectators. Numbers that are a staggering 74 percent higher than 2018.

A similar picture emerges for the second group opponent, in Spain: The duel with Germany achieved a market share of 65 percent because almost twelve million people watched. A number that surpasses all group matches in Russia.

South Korea recorded an increase of almost 100 percent compared to 2018 with the opening game against Uruguay. In the Netherlands, three quarters of all television viewers tuned in to the game against Ecuador. In the same breath, this meant the most successful TV broadcast of the entire calendar year.

Portugal also set a completely new record: around 5.4 million TV viewers watched the game against Uruguay. Never before have so many Portuguese switched on for a World Cup game.

Examples that could be continued further. It paints a very clear picture: the comparatively lower ratings and audience figures in Germany are the clear exception. In most of the other participating countries, football fans and other spectators are enthusiastic about the tournament and their teams.

FIFA will be happy. After all, the numbers and statistics so far fit in with their plan to brand the Qatar World Cup as the “best World Cup ever”. If you take a look at the TV ratings, this branding – at least in this direction – would not even be that far-fetched.
