“I don’t think you can defend titles, you have to keep attacking them. I’m still convinced that we have the quality to become European champions again,” said national team captain Mats Grambusch on Saturday evening in the “Aktuelle Sportstudio” of ZDF.
The European Championship from August 18th to 27th in Mönchengladbach is also an opportunity for striker Niklas Wellen to promote the sport. The title could give hockey an incredible boost, the way they played – a lot of parents could see that they are good guys who impress and think, okay, maybe that’s something for our child. “I think the tournament in the summer with the European Championship at home is a chance to experience us up close, to come to the stadium and watch the games. So fire free, everyone to the stadium! It’s going to be an incredible tournament and it can give German hockey an incredible boost,” said the 28-year-old.
The German men’s field hockey team won the world title for the first time in 17 years in India last Sunday with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out against defending champions Belgium. Goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg therefore expects greater media attention around the European Championships, but is relaxed about the associated expectations. “At the end of the day it’s important what we do with it, whether we put the pressure on ourselves or whether we reject it and just enjoy this moment, that we have the chance to have a European Championship in our own country. I think we can do it with our mental strength,” he said.
