Two weeks before the Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica (Slo), Halvor Egner Granerud is in top form: In Willingen on Sunday, the Norwegian jumped to his fourth win and twelfth podium in a row. The superior overall World Cup leader won yesterday on the Mühlenkopfschanze in front of Ryoyu Kobayashi (Jpn) and his compatriot Daniel-Andre Tande.

The best Austrian was Manuel Fettner in fourth, who didn’t have to mourn the podium place by just 1.8 points for long, as he almost missed the main competition of the top 50 due to a botched qualification (49th). “I could have watched that too,” said the Tyrolean. “If someone had told me after qualifying that I would be fourth, I would have taken it immediately.”

Hayboeck back in the top ten

Michael Hayböck, who reported back in eighth place in the top ten, showed improving form despite the rainy conditions. Born in Kirchberg-Theninger, however, like Stefan Kraft (13th) referred to the noticeable wear and tear. The trip overseas on Monday, where the World Cup will continue in Lake Placid over the weekend, will not replenish the batteries. Nevertheless, Hayböck is confident about the World Cup return to the USA, as he already competed in the Continental Cup there in autumn. “I’m trying to use the small advantage. None of my colleagues has seen the hill there yet,” said the 32-year-old.

After Saturday’s disappointing result – Kraft as the eighth best Austrian – head coach Andreas Widholzl spoke yesterday of a “conciliatory Willingen finish”. He saw it as a welcome change that most of the athletes now had a new chance in Lake Placid.
