Europa League: Despite penalty trauma: Alonso does not take a penalty

After losing 3-2 at home, a European Cup team would normally be happy to go to a penalty shoot-out. At Bayer Leverkusen, that’s not entirely certain.

Although Bayer Leverkusen has recently developed a real penalty trauma, coach Xabi Alonso apparently did not train extra penalties before the Europa League playoff second leg at AS Monaco.

“We prepared for the 90 minutes,” said Alonso: “You can never tell what will happen in a penalty shootout.” Bayer lost the first leg 2-3. Since the away goals rule has been abolished, there would be extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out even if Leverkusen won 1-0 or 2-1.

The Werkself missed all six penalties in the 2022 calendar year. After Edmond Tapsoba broke the black series against Bochum at the end of January, he was officially named the new penalty taker. On Sunday against FSV Mainz 05 he also missed.
