Swiss ski racer Marco Odermatt won the first of two giant slaloms this weekend in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

The 25-year-old won in his favorite discipline, in which he is also Olympic and world champion, ahead of Frenchman Alexis Pinturault and Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen.

Odermatt had already been confirmed as the overall World Cup winner before the start. His first pursuer in the standings, the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who specializes in speed disciplines, will not compete in the races in Kranjska Gora and will not be able to catch up with the Swiss at the season finale in Soldeu (Andorra) next week.

In the absence of the injured parallel world champion Alexander Schmid, Fabian Gratz was the only German to make it into the second round and finished 29th. Schmid’s season ended prematurely after a cruciate ligament rupture. Another giant slalom is scheduled for Sunday in Slovenia.
