One would think that there is euphoria and joy at Eintracht Frankfurt. They are sixth in the German Bundesliga and have also qualified for the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. You are even in the Champions League Round of 16 against Napoli. But the reality is different. After a strong autumn with the second-best first half of the season in the club’s history and participation in the premier class for the first time, Eintracht’s performance in recent weeks leaves a lot to be desired.

Only one of the last six games could be won. In the round of 16 of the Champions League, after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, you have your back against the wall. Oliver Glasner’s team also disappointed on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against relegation candidates VFB Stuttgart. “You need self-confidence and we don’t quite have that right now. It’s partly the results, partly the expectations that we have in particular. We want it with all our might. We’re trying to get relaxation and creativity in. It takes time for that a sense of achievement that would have been possible today,” says the Austrian after the draw in plain language.

But Glasner also shows that despite the crisis, the season has to be classified correctly. He was at a loss as to why the team had “no self-confidence” despite all the successes. “We’re idiots,” says the 48-year-old afterwards with a slight grin on his face. It’s all a matter of perspective, says Glasner. With a small CL miracle in the second leg against Napoli and a win next Sunday against fourth-placed Union Berlin, the world in Frankfurt would look different again.
