Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner would not have been really happy about missing out on the quarter-finals of the soccer Champions League: Before the 0: 3 in the round of 16 second leg, German hooligans had been up to mischief in Naples. “The football stage is being abused, that must be condemned very clearly,” Riedauer said clearly on Sky. Violence and riots have no place in football, “it’s a social problem”.

A week ago, the Italian authorities initially banned all German fans from the stadium, after an objection by Eintracht those from the city of Frankfurt. The club had already waived the ticket contingent to which it was entitled. The fans stayed at home – several hundred hooligans traveled anyway.

The situation escalated as dusk fell: Videos showed, among other things, how hooded rioters devastated the outside area of a bar and threw chairs and tables at the police officers. In the Piazza del Gesu they lit flares and also shot them at shops. A police car was set on fire on an access road and burned out.

The emergency services finally managed to put the ultras on buses and bring them back to their hotel in the waterfront from downtown. The buses were reportedly pelted with stones and bottles by Napoli fans.

The scenes of destruction are unacceptable”

“The scenes of destruction of our historic downtown are unacceptable,” said Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms these unspeakable acts of those responsible, no matter which side they came from.” Eintracht board member Philipp Reschke promised a complete investigation: “These are the riots that we have had to fear since the day of the draw. The most important thing is that there are no injuries.”

Real Madrid without problems

The game became a minor matter – and was decided sportingly at the break: After the 0: 2 at home, at the latest with the 0: 1 by Victor Osimhen, Frankfurt’s mini chance of promotion was gone.

In addition to Napoli, Real Madrid also made it into the quarter-finals without any problems: Liverpool ran from the start to make up for the 2:5 from the first leg, Real Madrid’s 1:0 through Karim Benzema (79th) ended the last hopes. As a sign of respect, the Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was played after the final whistle at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Quarter-finals and semi-finals will be drawn on Friday.
