The two-time Formula 1 champion topped his Mexican Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez for first place in the hour-long practice session. The advantage for the Dutchman was an impressive 0.613 seconds on the six-kilometre Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
In third place, Fernando Alonso, who was also two-time world champion, confirmed the quality of the new Aston Martin. The 41-year-old Spaniard had already finished third behind Verstappen and Perez in the opening race two weeks ago in Bahrain.
His teammate Lance Stroll finished fourth with two and a half hours to go in qualifying. However, the two Aston Martin colleagues were around a second slower on a lap than Verstappen.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton did not get past fifth place in the Mercedes, ahead of Charles Leclerc, who was penalized ten places after a change in the control electronics on the starting grid on Sunday (6 p.m. / Sky). Nico Hülkenberg, the only German regular driver this year, was 13th in the Haas.
