The dream of a brother final between Shamil and Wachid Borchashvili (both up to 81 kilos) ended early at the Judo World Championships.
For the seeded Shamil it was already the end of the line after a bye against ex-world champion Sagi Muki. The Olympic bronze medalist from Wels, who won the last meeting in Tokyo, took the lead with a counterattack (Waza-ari rating). Muki first equalized and finally decided the game when Borchashvili maneuvered himself into Muki’s hold on the ground with a turning technique.
His little brother Wachid sold himself dearly, moving into the quarter-finals with victories over Alain Aprahamian (Uru), Frank de Wit (Ned) and number eight seeded Vedat Albayrak (Tur), in which he defeated world number one Tato Grigalashvili (Geo ) lost. It didn’t get any easier in the repechage: Another overtime defeat against Olympic champion Takanori Nagase sealed the seventh place for the 24-year-old, for whom it is his best World Cup placement.
Piovesana surprised
