According to authorities on Monday, the shooting happened on Sunday evening in a residential area of the inland town of Atotonilco de Tula, in the state of Hidalgo. “An armed attack took place on the soccer field where a family sporting reunion was taking place,” said the Attorney General’s Office. Three children and young people were among the dead, and two other people were injured.
According to eyewitnesses, several armed and apparently drunk men opened fire on bystanders, causing a panic before fleeing. Two people died instantly and four others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Various criminal gangs are up to mischief in the state of Hidalgo, specializing in theft and gas smuggling.
