At the final whistle, the Rieder players fell to the ground while the Altach team celebrated: After the 0-1 draw against Vorarlberg, the Innviertler team needed a small football miracle in the remaining two rounds to avert their third relegation from the Bundesliga.
The gap to Vorarlberg, the last competitor that Rieder could catch up with, is three points. In addition, there is the star in the table due to the rounding off of Altach’s points after the regular season – Ried would have to get four more points than Altach to stay in the Bundesliga. “The resilience is unbroken. It’s going to be extremely difficult now, but we still have a chance,” said coach Maximilian Senft. “Our job now is to get three points twice.” Ried only managed two Bundesliga wins in a row in October, the last three was more than two months ago.
Ironically, an own goal decided the game: Stefan Haudum headed the ball from a corner, the ball bounced off the crossbar onto David Ungar’s thigh and from him into the goal – 0:1 (83rd). Even worse: When Haudums headed, Altach’s Lukas Jäger was offside immediately in front of Ried goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger, but according to referee Harald Lechner it was not a punishable offense. “He’s blocking him in defence, which looks a lot like offside to me,” said Senft. He was also annoyed by the performance in such an important game. “We’re absolutely mad at ourselves.”
It had started so well: Whipped up by 7,300 fans – the Josko Arena was sold out – Rieder started the game well: after four minutes, Seifedin Chabbi just missed a cross from Philipp Pomer. The 25-year-old made his comeback in the starting XI after his injury, replacing suspended left-back Roko Jurisic. The visitors were even closer to the lead: Tin Plavotic saved a shot from Csaba Bukta on the line. It was probably the Ried defender’s last action this season: he injured himself and had to be substituted after ten minutes. There is a suspicion of a muscle fiber tear.
Pomer: “We haven’t relegated yet”
The Innviertlers were shocked by the loss of the top scorer, but then started the second half furiously: Two minutes after the restart, Chabbi had the goal scream on his lips again: After a stab, he shot Altach goalkeeper Tino Casali from eight meters .
After that, both teams neutralized each other – too much was at stake to take any chances. Shortly after Altach’s lead, Ungar could have made up his own goal: a few centimeters were missing after a corner. On the other hand, a lot is missing to stay up. “We haven’t relegated yet,” said Philipp Pomer. “The calculation can still add up.”
