Cycling: Pogacar can no longer be denied Giro triumph

Tadej Pogacar dominates the Giro d’Italia. No one can keep up with the Slovenian. He wins his sixth stage. His triumphal ride is coming up on Sunday.

After his victory on the penultimate stage of the Giro d’Italia, Tadej Pogacar can no longer be denied overall victory. The 25-year-old Slovenian cycling superstar broke away from the chasing pack on the steep climb to Monte Grappa, caught up with the long-leading Italian Giulio Pellizzari and rode easily to the finish. For Pogacar, it was the sixth stage win at this year’s Giro.

Behind Pogacar, Aurelien Paret-Peintre took second place. The Frenchman won the sprint of the chasing group ahead of second-placed Daniel Felipe Martinez Poveda from Colombia. Georg Steinhauser from Scheidegg, who secured the first German stage victory on Wednesday, and other German riders did not play a major role on the 20th stage.

On the 184-kilometer stretch from Alpago to Bassano del Grappa on the southern edge of the Dolomites, Pogacar spent a long time in a larger chasing group. Around 36 kilometers from the finish, the 25-year-old from the UAE Team Emirates took off and left all his competitors behind. Even Pellizzari, who had been caught up, was only able to follow Pagacar for a few kilometers before he had to let go.

Pogacar was able to extend his lead even further thanks to his strong performance and is now almost ten minutes ahead of Martinez Poveda and Geraint Thomas (Great Britain). It is one of the largest gaps in the history of the tour, which ends in Rome on Sunday. Pogacar also won the mountain classification.
