Bundesliga: Farewell celebration: Gensheimer leaves handball stage

The result at the end is not fitting. Nevertheless, Rhein-Neckar Löwe Uwe Gensheimer is loudly celebrated by the fans and given an emotional farewell. The veteran is ending his career.

Long-time national team captain Uwe Gensheimer has said goodbye to the big handball stage. After recovering from a serious knee injury, the 37-year-old from the Rhein-Neckar Löwen was on the field once again in the 21:34 (11:19) defeat against the new champions SC Magdeburg and played his last league game for the Mannheim Bundesliga team.

The former world-class left winger scored four goals and was celebrated by 12,233 spectators in the SAP Arena.

“Uwe is the face for us. He started here as a young boy and comes from Mannheim. You can’t imagine the Lions without Uwe Gensheimer,” said managing director Jennifer Kettemann in the halftime break in an interview with “Dyn” about the club icon, who is ending her impressive career after this season.

Gensheimer to be head of sports at the Löwen from summer

The left winger started his career with the North Baden team in 2003. Apart from a three-year interlude between 2016 and 2019 at top French club Paris Saint-Germain, he has remained loyal to the club from his hometown ever since.

From the summer, Gensheimer will be the new sports director at the Lions, with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2005. He won the EHF Cup (2013), the championship (2016) and the DHB Cup (2023) with his self-proclaimed “club of the heart”.
