The handball players of SC Magdeburg fail in the semi-finals of the Champions League. The fourth title of the season thus eludes them.
Defending champion SC Magdeburg missed out on another place in the Champions League final and thus had to bury the dream of the historic quadruple. The German champion and cup winner lost to Aalborg HB in a dramatic semi-final at the Final Four tournament in Cologne by 26:28 (11:11). The Danish champion’s final opponent was then determined between the German record champion THW Kiel and Spain’s serial champion FC Barcelona.
In front of 20,000 fans, Icelander Omar Ingi Magnusson was the top scorer with ten goals for Magdeburg, who also won the Club World Cup this season. Instead of playing for their fourth title on Sunday, the SCM is now only fighting for the meaningless third place.
In the first Champions League duel between the two teams, neither of the rivals was able to gain an advantage for a long time. The lead changed back and forth constantly. Magdeburg hardly ever had the chance to use its feared fast-paced handball. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s players repeatedly got stuck in the compact Danish defense.
There were also a few technical errors and bad throws. The game went into the break with a draw. Even after the break, it remained a close match, which was only decided in the final phase in favor of the Danes and their top stars Mikkel Hansen and Niklas Landin.
