EM 2024: Rudi Völler talks about Waldemar Anton’s transfer

The move of Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton to Dortmund has been a known fact for a long time. But nothing is official yet – even if DFB sports director Rudi Völler gave that impression at a press conference.

Several media outlets have recently reported unanimously on the impending transfer of Waldemar Anton to Borussia Dortmund. The VfB Stuttgart defender is said to have opted for the offer from BVB and rejected offers from other top clubs, including champions Bayer Leverkusen.

However, the transfer has not yet been officially announced by the clubs. This caused confusion at the DFB press conference. Sports director Rudi Völler started chatting when he was asked about the personnel situation in the German defense and also mentioned Anton. “I don’t know how many clubs were interested. I know that my old club Bayer Leverkusen would have liked him too. In the end he decided on Dortmund,” he said. This made the journalists in the room sit up and take notice.

EM 2024: Rudi Völler backtracks again

It remains to be seen whether Völler really knows more than is officially known. When asked by DFB press spokeswoman Franziska Wülle, the 64-year-old immediately backtracked. He said he had read in the newspaper that Anton was going to Dortmund: “I didn’t want to announce anything here. Let’s see if I’m right or not.” Nevertheless, Anton’s move has become a lot more likely.

The 28-year-old was one of the key players in VfB Stuttgart’s successful season, which ended with a surprise runner-up finish. This earned him his national team debut in March and a nomination for the European Championships in his home country. The center-back’s time could now come in the round of 16 against Denmark: Jonathan Tah is missing from his position due to a yellow card suspension, and Antonio Rüdiger is in danger of missing out with a strain. The game will take place in Dortmund – possibly at Waldemar Anton’s new workplace.
