Etienne Portmann from Schott Mainz did not experience the final whistle of the DFB Cup match against Greuther Fürth in the stadium because a helicopter was waiting for him after he was substituted.
Etienne Portmann will probably never forget August 17, 2024. Because on the very day that his best friend marries his girlfriend’s twin sister, the Schott Mainz midfielder plays against Greuther Fürth in the DFB Cup.
His substitution in the 61st minute was not the result of a tactical change or his sporting performance, but rather due to the time of day. As best man, Portmann probably took a shower first and then headed off to the wedding – in a helicopter, as he himself told the TV broadcaster Sky before kick-off.
Wedding instead of final whistle in the DFB Cup
Portmann didn’t even get to see the goal that made it 0-2 in the stadium. But despite his team’s expected defeat against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Portmann will hopefully remember this date as a good one. Even for footballers, sometimes there are more important things than football.
