The Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL are mourning the loss of ice hockey pro Johnny Gaudreau. The 31-year-old US national player and his two-year-younger brother Matthew were killed in a traffic accident in the US federal state of New Jersey. As the local police confirmed, both were hit by a car on Thursday (local time) while riding their bicycles and were fatally injured.

The accident occurred south of the metropolis of Philadelphia. The brothers wanted to celebrate their sister’s wedding there on Friday. The driver of the car was arrested and is suspected of having been drunk at the time of the accident.

Goal against German team at last World Cup

NHL boss Gary Bettman was dismayed and reminded everyone that Gaudreau was not only a professional ice hockey player, but also a family man. The German Ice Hockey Association also expressed its horror at the fatal incident. “Our thoughts are with their families, relatives and friends as well as teammates and staff from USA Hockey and the Columbus Blue Jacket,” the DEB wrote in a statement. At the World Championships in the Czech Republic this year, there was a 1:6 defeat in the group match against the US selection, with Gaudreau scoring the 0:3.

The striker initially played for the Calgary Flames for nine years in the NHL and was about to start his third season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Gaudreau, known as “Johnny Hockey”, collected 642 points through goals and assists in his 644 games in the North American professional league. With 30 assists and a total of 43 points, he is the most successful US player at world championships in both categories.
