Winning horse collapses behind the finish line and dies

Shock at the horse race in Cheltenham: An animal dies immediately after winning. Two other horses also did not survive the traditional equestrian event.

The triumph was followed by tragedy: At the November meeting in Cheltenham – one of the most traditional horse races in England – jockey Sean Bowen and his horse “Abuffalosoldier” left the competition behind. Immediately after the victory, the rider was interviewed while still sitting on his gelding.

But the competition had weakened the animal so much that after the interview it collapsed with Bowen on its back. Doctors rushed to the scene immediately, but the seven-year-old horse died. “Abuffalo soldier, the winner of our fourth race, collapsed behind the finish line and was immediately treated by our experienced veterinarians, but unfortunately could not be saved,” the organizers said. The exact cause of death is still unclear.

Three horses die in one day at Cheltenham

The incident was shown live on television – a shock to many equestrian fans and to commentator Ed Chamberlain. “It’s terribly sad, this is a sport that takes us through ups and downs. It’s very sad and gloomy here in Cheltenham now,” he commented on the scene.

In total, three horses lost their lives on the last day of the equestrian event in Cheltenham. A racehorse collapsed during the same race as “Abuffalo Soldier” and did not survive. Another animal suffered fatal injuries in a fall shortly before the finish.

The two horses that collapsed were believed to have a cardiovascular cause, such as sudden heart failure or a ruptured artery, said Liam Kearns, Cheltenham’s senior veterinarian. An autopsy would have to clarify more details. He clearly contradicted allegations that the horses had been badly treated: “All horses are thoroughly examined at home before they come to the races. They are constantly monitored when they arrive at the racetrack. No horse would start if they had been told beforehand problems.” Kearns called the fact that several horses died in one day “a huge coincidence.”
