Nagelsmann on handball: “Amazed by my reaction”
Julian Nagelsmann speaks again about the football excitement of the year in an RTL documentary. You also learn how the DFB chef motivates the players and that the mascot Ringo wears a mullet.
In RTL’s new European Championship documentary about the national team, Julian Nagelsmann is amazed that he remained comparatively calm after the missed hand penalty in the quarter-finals against Spain (1:2). “In the aftermath, I’m also surprised at my reaction. There were normal throw-ins where I reacted much more aggressively,” said the national soccer coach in the documentary “Our Team – The Home European Championship 2024”, which was released on January 11th Free TV can be seen on RTL.
“In the end you have to try to stick to the content somewhere; that we can still win the game even if we don’t get the penalty,” explains Nagelsmann in the 92-minute film, which will be released on January 9th with the DFB protagonists premieres in a Munich cinema. The documentary will also be shown in selected cinemas at the other nine European Championship venues on January 9th and 10th.
Neuer: “Fatal at the end of the day”
The handball scene with Spain’s Marc Cucurella, which referee Anthony Taylor did not consider worthy of a penalty, is only briefly discussed in the documentary. “It was very clear to me that this would be checked 100 percent,” says goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (38), who has since retired from the national team: “And at the end of the day it was fatal that that wasn’t the case.”
The then DFB captain Ilkay Gündogan also had his say: “In eight or nine out of ten cases it would have gone the other way. I thought to myself that it was a very bitter decision against us,” says the 34-year-old looking back .
“Today we shave the Spaniards – dry”
Otherwise, the documentary primarily provides atmospheric impressions, but also what goes on behind the scenes in the national team. You can see, for example, how DFB chef Anton Schmaus motivates the team before the quarter-finals (“today we are shaving the Spaniards – dry”) and that defender David Raum is looking after “camp mascot” Ringo, a canary with a mullet . Thanks to space we learn: “Ringo loves cucumbers, lettuce, apples.”
